In July, 1962, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. and graduated from boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina. As a member of the 6th Marine regiment until 1964, he served through the Cuban Missile Crisis and was sent to the Dominican Republic when the U.S. Embassy was under rebel fire. Donald extended his service for an additional year, and then another, serving with the 3rd Marine Regiment in Vietnam from 1966 to August 1968.
On December 14th, 1963, he married Linda Ann Schiavo. They had one child:
